Day 77 Transiting the Panama Canal

Today was the focus for this segment of the MegaVoyage, the Panama Canal. Even though I have sailed through the canal on numerous occasions I still find it riveting. Although I probably have taken well over a thousand photos in the past I still managed another 400 today. There is so much to see along the way. We began the day sailing under the Bridge of the Americas and entering the canal at the Miraflores Locks. Miraflores consist of two locks which were used to partially get us to the level of Gatun Lake. The next set of locks, Pedro Miguel (single lock) finishes the job which results in the ship being raised a total of 26 meters to the level of Gatun Lake. After passing Pedro Miguel Lock we went under the Centennial Bridge named to commemorate 100 years of independence for Panama from Columbia. We spent the next couple of hours sailing along, noticing the ongoing work to expand the canal in the future. The final set of 3 locks, the Gatun Locks, drop us back down 26 meters to get us back to sea level. It was an extremely interesting and pretty cool day…. figuratively, weather wise it was hotter than Hades. Tomorrow is a day at sea…. Next stop Aruba, can you say day at the beach?

Did the captain happen to mention how much it cost to go through the locks? I know it's by weight and I wonder if they ever share that with you...

Aruba eh? Hmmm lets see.

PALM Beach bud! And I bet you think of Deb & I as you plant your ass in the wind.
Deb loved Aruba and not because she got to chase your money in the surf. So we booked the Grand in 09 as it is one stop also St Vincent.
Take care.
